What do you think about The Silent Book Club concept? Sounds perfect for introverts like me, but the only time I really “read” lately is with an audiobook to and from work.
Do you like to venture out and read in community spaces, even if it is a regular library? Once in a blue moon I like to venture down to our local library, but time seems to be accelerating and disappearing lately.
What is your feeling about book clubs in general? They feel like an excuse to have a small, controllable social event and that’s okay, but I’d rather have an intimate discussion with one other person.
That's it right there, I'm a one-on-one person as well. I am not good in group settings (although I can handle it, for a while, but generally don't prefer groups).
I use audio books when I'm building the backyard cabin. I enjoy them as long as I can get the volume right... ;)
I know about Silent Bookclubs because there used to be one in this neighborhood. It may not have been exactly like what you describe here, but that's what it was called. The deal was that members announced the book they wanted to read and it was put on a list. Then on the first of the month you took your book and placed it by the front door of the next person behind you on the list.
This meant someone left a book by your door that you'd read that month— and then move it on to the person after you on the official list. It worked well until a neighbor woman began to hoard the books never passing one on each month, just keeping them all. Soon after this was discovered the club disbanded.
In general I've had *meh* experiences with book clubs. I know some people are members of good ones, but the ones I've been a part of were more gossip-y than bookish.
That's a cool idea! I guess the honor's system plays a part here… similar concept as the The Little Library system, although that is more a donation system.
I prefer to select my own books, frankly, and not be dictated to which book to read. My mood changes often… 😊
I saw Silent Book Club listed on my local bookshops events page but didn't know it was a "thing" until now. I am intrigued!
Oh, let me know what, if any, experience you have with it!
I haven't been to one, but I am interested in exploring one, or at least look at the virtual options.
I hope to check it out this fall. I will report back!
