Love what you're doing with Substack - and the story of your trip :) Who knew there were so many rules around coffee!? I imagine they would be horrified by the gallons of instant coffee I put away :)

The Italians are very protective of their coffee culture!

I'm not a fan of instant myself but my parents liked it in the afternoon. Shhh... Don't tell anyone about drinking instant, especially not it Italy. 😎

Lol about coffee rules. I had a similar story in England.

It was a hot day for my brother's wedding. We stopped for a quick lunch before the ceremony and I ordered an Iced Coffee, which was not on the menu. My mother and the waitress looked weirdly at me, but she toddled off. Soon returned and said "Chef doesn't know what that is; we can't do that". I didn't want hot coffee, so I said "what about a strong coffee with a glass of ice on the side. They refused, apparently Chef would not make it if I was going to dilute it with ice. So no Iced Coffee.

That's a great story! Who would have thought iced coffee was frowned upon in the UK...

I wonder how long ago this was. I bet the iced coffee craze in North America has traveled to the UK in recent years too... (I find them too sweet when purchased, but make my own at home without sugar).
